The recall came after thousands of patients with Stryker Rejuvenate implants complained of adverse reactions, even though the system was supposed to be a safer and better alternative to metal-on-metal hip replacements.
The Rejuvenate system uses a ceramic part that prevents metal from rubbing against metal, but other components are made of chromium and cobalt, and the stem is titanium-coated. These metals may still break down and be released into the tissue near the implant, causing a condition called metallosis.
