Our team is proud to share that William J. Lee, JD, MS, FACE, Scientific Director at Kershaw Talley Barlow, has been elected a Fellow of the American College of Epidemiology (FACE), one of the highest honors in the field of epidemiology. Fellowship is awarded to epidemiologists who have made significant and sustained contributions to the science, practice, and leadership of epidemiology.

Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of health and disease in populations. In litigation, epidemiologic evidence plays a critical role in establishing causation and liability, particularly in complex cases involving pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and environmental exposures. William’s election highlights his standing as a leader at the intersection of epidemiology, law, and policy.

Bridging Science and the Law

As Scientific Director, William leads our firm’s scientific practice group, providing comprehensive epidemiologic and biostatistical analyses to support high-stakes, complex litigations, regulatory matters, and public health investigations. His work involves evaluating large-scale data, developing real-world evidence, and collaborating with leading experts to develop rigorous, defensible, and transparent causation and liability arguments in some of the nation’s most technically complicated cases.

William has played a key role in shaping litigation strategy in major national pharmaceutical and medical device cases including Oral Phenylephrine Marketing and Sales Practices Litigation (MDL No. 3089), Acetaminophen – ASD/ADHD Products Liability Litigation (MDL No. 3043), Gilead Tenofovir Cases (JCCP No. 5043), and Essure Product Cases (JCCP No. 4887). His expertise strengthens the firm’s ability to represent hundreds of thousands of patients in cases where scientific evidence often makes or breaks the case.

William is also an active leader in the epidemiology community. He serves on the American College of Epidemiology’s Ethics and Policy Committee, is President of its Research and Education Foundation, and represents the College in the International Network for Epidemiology in Policy, a policymaking body comprising scientists from more than 50 academic societies. These roles underscore his commitment to advancing integrity, education, and best practices in epidemiology.

“Being elected a Fellow of the American College of Epidemiology is a tremendous honor,” said Managing Partner Bill Kershaw. “It recognizes the impact of applying rigorous epidemiologic science to real-world challenges, including the intersection of law, policy, and public health. Mr. Lee’s work supports clients and courts with the highest standards of scientific expertise.”

Kershaw Talley Barlow is known for combining top-tier legal advocacy with unparalleled scientific expertise. Having a Fellow of the American College of Epidemiology leading our scientific efforts reflects our continued investment in cases where outcomes depend on the strength and quality of scientific evidence.

This recognition reinforces William’s contributions to and the critical role epidemiology plays in our work representing individuals, families, and communities across the country in complex litigation.
