3 Problems with the Chrysler, Jeep, and Dodge Active Headrest

We depend on every part of our vehicle to operate safely. Sometimes, even one faulty component can lead to a car crash. This can happen even with a minor part of a vehicle, such as a headrest.

In fact, there have been numerous reports of the headrests in Chrysler, Jeep, and Dodge vehicles causing injuries to passengers. Learn more about these headrests and three problems associated with them.

Understanding the Issues with Active Headrests

Headrests are meant to protect passengers’ heads and necks from severe whiplash during a car accident. Chrysler, Jeep, and Dodge attempted to take this a step further by designing and installing “active” headrests that project outward during a rear-end accident in order to “catch” passengers’ heads.

Unfortunately, however, these headrests have done more harm than good. There have been several reports of these active headrests projecting even when a rear-end accident does not occur. Three specific issues associated with these active headrests include:

  • Projecting when the car is in motion
  • Projecting when the car is stopped
  • Projecting when the car is turned off

Such unexpected projection of the headrest can startle and even injure drivers while they are operating their vehicles. Not only can this cause an injury when there ordinarily would not have been one, but this event could even contribute to a car crash by distracting the driver or causing them to make an input they did not intend.
