Tragedy Strikes Maui: Deadly Wildfire Claims Lives

On August 8th, the island of Maui experienced the deadliest wildfire in the United States in over a century. As of Thursday, August 17th, the death toll has reached 111, but the number is expected to rise as emergency responders search more of the area.

Devastation and Loss: Maui's Fire Victims Struggle

Maui residents were forced to flee from their homes and seek shelter wherever possible, with some individuals forced to tread water in the ocean for hours. The victims of these fires have lost their lives, their loved ones, their property, their businesses, and their sense of security. Our hearts sincerely go out to all of those affected by this tragedy.

Hawaii Electric Under Scrutiny

Kershaw Talley Barlow has begun investigating a potential lawsuit against Hawaii Electric, the largest utility in Maui and across the rest of Hawaii. Reports have begun to surface that the fire began after trees fell into a Hawaii Electric power line due to high winds. In the week prior, Hawaii Electric had reportedly received warnings from experts to shut down power during high winds. They allegedly ignored these warnings and continued to supply power as winds reached speeds of up to 60 miles per hour. Victims also assert that Hawaii Electric failed to properly maintain its equipment, address or prevent sagging power lines, and implement proper vegetation management around its lines and equipment prior to the fire.  In short, victims allege that this fire was preventable and that Hawaii Electric's alleged negligence is responsible for igniting and exacerbating the fire.

Victims Seek Accountability from Hawaii Electric

If Hawaii Electric is determined to be responsible for the wildfire, they can be held liable for the economic and non-economic damages experienced by victims of this disaster.
